Preschool Program

Our Preschool is designed with a strong, developmentally appropriate, early academic curriculum based on children's need to explore, balanced with their need for structure. Teachers see their role as guides, providing a secure, nurturing environment that fosters social, intellectual, physical and creative growth through a variety of experiences.

We recognize and enjoy each child's individuality, learning style, social development and family culture. We welcome international and racially diverse families. Children are encouraged to explore their world, making discoveries and solving problems along the way. Activities are based on thematic units, which are initiated by both teachers and students. Dramatic play, creative arts, literature, math and science are regular components of class activities for all ages. Our curriculum also includes Spanish instruction (four days a week), music (twice a week), physical education (twice a week), and a story time with our librarian (once a week).  These classes are all taught by faculty specialists.  All entering students must be potty trained.

The Chickadees Class (3-year-olds) emphasizes beginning group dynamics, small and large muscle development, the safe use of materials, the development of language as a written form of communication, and the use of numerals, counting, and patterns in both math and reading.

The Robins Class (4-year-olds) builds on the earlier skills and begins writing more as skills and interests build. Children begin building independence and appropriate social skills.

Bluebirds (5-year-olds) begin using math, scientific principles and developing strong reading skills.  A variety of focused activities prepare the children to enter kindergarten with confidence.

All of our preschoolers begin their day together in a "Community Circle," where they recite the Pledge of Allegiance, sing "Good Morning" songs in both English and Spanish, and engage in a short, whole-group Spanish activity. After "Community Circle" the children break into two classes, the Chickadee Class and the Robin/Bluebird Class to continue the rest of their daily activities.
