Welcome to KCDS Physical Education.  Research has shown that physical activity helps students stay healthy, attend school more regularly, maintain focus, and increase achievement.  While students are in the gym they will experience many different types of movements and skills.  Through this experience I hope they find an activity that they enjoy and pursue further, as health is a life long goal.

 Preschool

Preschool students are exposed to a variety of skills and movements.  Young students learn how to follow directions using music cues.  We practice locomotor movements such as galloping, skipping, running, and hopping. We introduce throwing, tossing, catching, kicking, striking objects with implements, tumbling and overall coordination activities. Preschoolers are also introduced to the importance of healthy food choices and exercise.  We incorporate knowledge of colors, numbers, letters and body parts into our activities to aid with concepts being taught in the classroom.

 Kindergarten-Second Grade

Kindergarten-second grade review concepts taught in earlier years and then are challenged to use those concepts in higher level activities.  Students start to engage in games where there are more rules and strategies.  We continue to work on locomotor development, body part identification, healthy food choices, good sportsmanship and team play, as well as increase confidence in personal abilities.

 Third-fifth Grade

Third through fifth graders start to interact as a team more.  Upper elementary students have the opportunity to use their skills to play more games that involve strategy, thinking about positioning on the field or court and how to move to an open spot.  We start to learn more about nutrition and why it is important to make healthy food choices and how exercise is important for lifelong health.  We continue to practice locomotors, tumbling, climbing, teambuilding, and individual skill practice.  Sportsmandhip and respect for yourself and others is a main focus during game activities.

 Middle School

Middle School students participate in units during physical education.  We cover sports such as Ultimate frisbee, flag football, circuit training, soccer, team handball, basketball, pickle ball and many others.  Each unit usually starts with skill development on an individual basis and then we move into small game settings and then one big culminating game.  We also discuss healthy eating and exercise, as well preventing disease.  We also like to discuss current events in sport.

The following is the grading structure and expectations for middle school students:

All students have earned five points just by walking into class.  The following are ways they can lose points.

Being late

Not dressing

Lack of participation and teamwork

Lack of effort

Lack of respect

If student does not dress on consecutive days the point loss doubles.

There will be written pre and post tests for many of the games and sports played to check for understanding of rules and flow of play.  Only post tests will be graded and will add to the point accumulation for the day.  Most emphasis will be placed on the five points stated above.
