On the banks of the Red Cedar there's a school that's known to all! A few miles upstream from that school was my hometown, where I grew up on a centennial farm. The question wasn't whether I would attend Michigan State someday, but what degree might I pursue, as my interests seemed numerous: forestry, athletics, veterinary school, or instrumental music education. Since I am the band director at Kalamazoo Country Day, you can conclude how that all worked out. Although I had been a guitarist, clarinetist, and toured with the Blue Lake International Band as a saxophonist, I was a bassoon major at Michigan State. In my senior year the bassoonist became the horn section leader in the Spartan Marching Band. After a few teaching experiences as an assistant Marching Band director at Lansing Eastern and serving as the director of bands at Delton Kellogg Schools I went back to Michigan State University to pursue a master's in curriculum and instructional development. I have also taken graduate classes in instrumental music at Western Michigan University and Illinois State University. Locally I have been employed as the recreation manager at Sandy Pines Resort, piano instructor at Stannard's Music, and general music instructor and director of bands for the Catholic Schools of Greater Kalamazoo. I have worked at Kalamazoo Country Day since 1991 and supplement my income through private lessons and performing with local bands: Dixievibes of Kalamazoo and Cabtown Checkers Jazz Band. Currently I am the primary caregiver of an active 87-year-old and two standard poodles.
