Eryn Sutherland

My name is Eryn Sutherland, and I am the Spanish teacher for grades 1–8 here at Kalamazoo Country Day School. The students call me Maestra, which means "teacher" in Spanish.

I obtained my degree in Spanish from North Central College, in Naperville, Illinois, after which I lived and worked in Costa Rica for a year. In Costa Rica, I taught English to business professionals in the San Jose Valley and translated occasionally for medical mission groups traveling to Nicaragua. I have been very fortunate to travel to several Spanish-speaking countries, including also Honduras, Mexico, and Spain in addition to Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

I came to KCDS in 2005 and have enjoyed sculpting the Spanish program into what it is today. I am proud of the level of proficiency the students reach, and am always impressed with how quickly young students internalize words and phrases.

My husband and I both love the outdoors and have a passion for travel. I like to stay active, and when the weather is nice, I love to bike, rollerblade, walk, swim, kayak, and fish. I also love to cook, and in my opinion, nothing beats a good meal shared with family and friends.
