February Overview
What a "sweet" time we will have this month in second grade.
We will be continuing our study of "adult math" as we focus on subtraction regrouping. Multiple digit computation will give us lots of practice with both addition and subtraction.
Our social studies unit on the United States states and capitals nears completion and we will further expand our study by learning about the Presidents of the United States. A virtual trip of Washington, D.C. will give students an awareness of our nation's capital. After learning about alphabetical order and the dictionary earlier this year, we are now ready to examine the encyclopedia to develop a reports on the Presidents, which is our next long term writing project.
In science, we will take on such subjects as snowflake formation, topographical landforms of the earth, and the many uses of peanuts. The scientific method will be introduced as a culmination to our whale reports. For our experiment we will use ice cream to compare the vanilla flavor of four different brands. There is no better way to get little kids attention than with food!
Let's not forget our celebration of St. Valentine's Day with some extra special lessons that we will LOVE doing, along with growing friendships and yummy treats.
